Paint Correction

So, what is paint correction and how can it help me and my vehicle?

Well, you’ve probably all heard of cut and polishing. In short, paint correction is just that but on a more hands-off level. Let us explain.

Paint correction, in its truest form, is a cut and polish treatment using very fine abrasive compounds applied by machine rather than by hand.

Paint correction is considered to be a more permanent solution as the process resurfaces the paint’s top layer removing scuffs, swirl marks and chalky or oxidised paint work.

As the Gold Coast and Brisbane’s premier paint correction specialists we wanted to delve a bit deeper into Paint Correction, how we can help and to point out areas that, no matter how hard we try, paint correction treatments simply won’t help.

Let’s start with the paint issues that paint correction can definitely help restore your bodywork to its former glory.

Bird & Bat Droppings

Living in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast you have almost definitely experienced a combination of bird and bat droppings caking your car’s paintwork.

Both bird and bat droppings are incredibly acidic and the damage starts the second it hits your car. Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t stop there. The heat, humidity and scorching sun found in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast only increases the effect of bird and bat droppings on your car.

Providing you can identify the early signs of bird and bat dropping damage we can absolutely machine polish the affected area.

Signs to look for:

  • Bird or bat excrement on paint
  • Slight ghosting on paintwork after heavy rain or after you’ve washed your vehicle

Entry Marks

No matter how careful you are or the make and model of vehicle you drive you will have scratch marks around your door handles, boot or bonnet.

Entry mark damage is normally made up of light scratches, swirls and very shallow paint damage that can very easily be fixed using Dirt Buster’s paint correction service.

Scrub Marks

Scrub marks are caused by vegetation, scrub or other organic matter rubbing against the bodywork of your vehicle. The damage caused by scrub marks can vary from very light to deep, heavy damage sometimes running along the entire length of your car. We quite often see this type of damage from customers who have just returned from places like Fraser Island, Moreton Island and the Cape etc.

Depending on the severity of the scrub marks, paint correction can fix up this damage so your vehicle looks like new.

Swirl Marks

Swirl marks are those microscopic scratches you can see in the clear coat on the surface of your vehicle.

Swirl marks are created when very small particles in clothes, sponges or chamois come into contact with your bodywork when your car is being detailed.

Paint Transfer

We’ve all seen it; paint transfer!

Paint transfer occurs when your vehicle panel strikes another painted object such as a car, pillar or garage door.

If you experience paint transfer it is possible to simply polish the transfer off your car. The real issues with paint transfer isn’t just that unsightly mark left on your bodywork. We often see a multitude of other pain correction issues from even the slightest of bumps.

It isn’t uncommon to experience deeper scratches once the initial paint transfer has been polished off. In certain circumstances your vehicle may need to visit the paint shop if the undercoat has been exposed.

Chalky or Oxidised Paint

If you’ve ever owned a red, white or black vehicle you may have experienced chalky or oxidised paint. In short, this issue is caused by exposure to the three things we have plenty of in Brisbane and the Gold Coast; water, sun and oxygen.

These three elements cause your car’s paint work to breakdown over time. Luckily, this issue is very common and one that can be, in most cases, rectified with the correct paint correction treatments.

Colour Fade

Colour fade is an issue we see fairly often on vehicles and cars that don’t have a clear top-coat. This type of issue is caused by excessive exposure to the elements and can be very unsightly.

Using our paint correction treatments we have helped many car owners return their car’s paint work to as good as it looked the day they bought their car.

Paint Ghosting

Ghosting isn’t as scary as it sounds. Ghosting occurs when stickers or vinyl are removed from a vehicle exposing the contrast between the exposed paintwork and the previously covered paint.

Think of it as a tan line on a vehicle.

This guide of issues we can help you with isn’t exhaustive and only details the most common problems we encounter on a daily basis.

Like everything, there are certain issues that no matter how much we might try we simply can’t fix for you and your car might need to visit a panel beaters or paint shop.

We see several such issues every day and to make it easy for you to identify, we have listed these issues below.

Deep Scratches and Key Marks & Missing Paint

This is, by far, the most common issue we are asked about. Unfortunately, due to the nature of deep scratches and typical key marks the clear coat of your car has been damaged. It is also more than likely to see your bodywork scratched right down to the bare metal on your car. The only solution here is to visit a paint shop.

Failed Clear Coat

This particular issue requires a visit to your local paint shop for a re-spray.

Caused by excessive exposure to Queensland’s harsh elements clear coat failure exposes itself in the form of blistering, bubbling or pelting clear layers off of your car’s surface.

Aged Animal Droppings

If you catch animal dropping quickly, we can absolutely help you rectify the issue. However, aged animal dropping such as bird and bat droppings can cause damage that is impossible to fix with any paint correction treatment. This type of damage will require a respray.

Water Spot Damage

Those visits to your local carwash or those leisurely Sunday afternoons spent washing your car in the sun can cause a lot of damage if left untreated.

That’s right, even water can cause expensive damage to your car’s paint work. If left untreated, the minerals in water can have an adverse reaction with your paint work and can cause your clear coat to be eaten away. If this happens there isn’t too much that can be done as too much polishing may totally remove your clear coat.
